My name is Paul Davis, owner and operator of TransPro of Denton, and I would like to introduce you to how we evolved into a transmission business in Denton, Texas. During my final year of high school in Riverhead, N.Y., I studied automobile repair and was intrigued with automatic transmissions. I disassembled my first transmission on our picnic table in our backyard with very limited tools and experience. The transmission was from my Dad’s 1961 Pontiac Catalina, and I became even more intrigued with how these complex assemblies functioned.
After serving a short time in the military as a staff car driver at West Point Military Academy I moved in with my Aunt and Uncle in a Chicago suburb. In my search for employment I applied at a major Transmission Service shop and they hired me on the spot. I started by removing and installing transmissions and eventually transferred to New York City where I soon was rebuilding transmissions. I enjoyed the challenge of taking something so complex apart, rebuilding it, and then having it function in the car again as though it were new.
Another challenge I encountered was seeing the tremendous amount of dishonesty prevalent in this industry. Sadly it was based on the fact that most individuals don’t understand the basics of how an automatic transmission functions, and that many other components of their auto can create symptoms that are often misdiagnosed, unintentionally but most often intentionally, as transmission failure. I thank God that He gave me a conscience and I wanted no part of these shady practices.
I spent the next 34 years, at many different shops, in 5 different states searching for a shop where the customers best interest was put first every time. My family and I moved to Texas in the fall of 1985 and to be honest I found the situation just as bad, if not worse, with people being taken advantage of due to their unfamiliarity with the automatic transmission. In 1989 I went to work for a Chrysler dealership, received factory training on their automatic transmissions, and there I found I could practice honesty because I diagnosed each vehicle I worked on personally. As my family grew we moved around the metroplex and I spent some time working for Ford and Lincoln/Mercury dealerships where I also received factory training in rebuilding their transmissions. We eventually moved to the Denton area in 2004, since I had been working here since 1991.
My quest continued through the summer of 2007 when in August of that year I decided to open my own business and now I can treat you, my customer with the respect and integrity that you deserve. Whether it’s a simple adjustment, a fifty dollar solenoid, or a complete rebuild, know this that I will only perform the repairs that your vehicle needs!
